About this position
PhD opportunity in droplet redistribution by rolling wheels at LMFA, Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1 in Lyon, France, with collaboration from the University of Cambridge and Dstl (UK).
This is a fully funded 4-year experimental PhD in fluid mechanics, multiphase flows, and soft matter physics. The project studies how liquid droplets are transferred and redistributed by rolling wheels on contaminated surfaces, with emphasis on capillary effects, inertial forces, centrifugal effects, and interfacial instabilities.
Research methods include high-speed imaging experiments, experimental fluid mechanics, scaling analysis, and modelling. Key topics include thin liquid films under wheel contact, capillary bridge dynamics, droplet breakup and ejection, and transport by rotating surfaces. The project aims to develop new experimental approaches and physical models for contamination and decontamination processes.
The student will join an internationally recognised laboratory in Lyon and benefit from an international research environment, research visits to Cambridge, interactions with Dstl researchers, and a dedicated experimental budget. The position is a full-time contract with a gross salary of €2,300/month, plus paid holidays, health insurance, pension/disability benefits, meal vouchers, and SYNTEC collective agreement benefits.
Applicants should have a strong background in fluid mechanics, physics, or a related field, along with strong motivation for experimental research, interest in interdisciplinary problems, and good English. French is not required.
Applications are reviewed continuously. Send a CV, motivation letter, and academic transcripts from the last three years to [email protected] before 2026-08-16. Early applications are strongly encouraged.
