About this position

PhD position at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) in the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering on sensing viscosity with ultrasound. The project focuses on ultrasound sensors, flow sensing, surface acoustic wave sensing, and quantitative measurement of fluid properties such as viscosity and flow in industrial and biomedical contexts.

The research aims to develop innovative, modular, and scalable flowmeters that can measure both flow and viscosity using ultrasonic surface acoustic wave principles. The post mentions applications in food production, medicine, semiconductor manufacturing, environmental monitoring, and medical infusion systems. The work will be carried out at TU Delft in close collaboration with Twente University and leading companies in flow sensing.

Typical tasks include investigating ultrasound sensors and viscosity of flows, developing new measurement strategies, building a quantitative experimentally validated model, designing an experimental sensing platform, characterizing propagation loss, quality factors, travel speed, resonance behavior, and optimal excitation frequencies, and writing a doctoral dissertation. The PhD candidate will also publish in peer-reviewed journals, present at international conferences, and contribute to education by supervising master students.

Eligibility: MSc in mechanical engineering, physics, materials science, or a related area; experience with modeling, experiments, and design; strong communication skills; creativity, independence, self-motivation, and initiative. English proficiency is required for doctoral study and scientific writing.

Funding and conditions: 4-year doctoral employment in principle, with salary from €3204 to €4051 gross per month (full-time, 38 hours), plus 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% end-of-year bonus. TU Delft also offers health insurance discounts, a monthly work costs contribution, flexible work schedules, and relocation support to the Netherlands.

Deadline: 28 August 2026. Apply online with a CV and motivational letter.
