About this position

Leiden University Centre for Linguistics (LUCL) is inviting applications for a fully funded PhD position in Dutch morphology and constructicography within the NWO project The Morphicon: A new gateway to morphological knowledge.

The project aims to build the first morphological constructicon for Dutch: a digital network of lexical constructions and grammatical constructions that captures how word-formation patterns, simple and complex words, and constructional schemas relate to one another. The PhD candidate will work in a small team with the PI and a postdoc, in collaboration with the Instituut voor de Nederlandse Taal.

The research focus of the PhD is the interplay between grammatical regularity and lexical idiosyncrasy in morphological constructions. The candidate will investigate selected constructional families in depth, while also contributing to the broader team effort of transforming existing lexicographic and grammatical resources into a digital network.

Tasks include extracting word-formation patterns from descriptive literature, encoding constructional schemas, matching complex words to schemas and subschemas, annotating data for network building, and helping test digital tools including LLMs for classification and annotation. The role also includes presenting research at workshops and conferences, publishing results, writing the PhD thesis, and assisting with bachelor-level teaching and knowledge dissemination activities.

Eligibility highlights: a completed Master’s degree in linguistics, strong interest in grammar and morphology, native or near-native Dutch, good academic English, and excellent research/analytical skills. Experience in computational linguistics or Construction Grammar is a plus.

The position is based in Leiden, Netherlands, and the appointment is for four years. Salary starts at €3,204 gross per month in year one and rises to €4,051 in year four, plus holiday and year-end allowances. The start date is January 2027, with some flexibility.

Applications close on 1 November 2026. Applicants should submit a cover letter, CV, transcripts, a writing sample, and the names and email addresses of two referees via the university application system.
