Leiden University’s Faculty of Humanities (LUCAS) invites applications for a fully funded PhD position as part of the ERC-funded LangPro project, focusing on 'Professional Opportunities in the Early Modern Language Sector (1550–1650)'. The project, led by dr. Alisa van de Haar with Prof Nadine Akkerman as co-supervisor, explores how language skills such as reading, writing, translating, and editing created professional, financial, and social opportunities for men and women in North-West Europe during the early modern period.

The successful candidate will conduct archival research in the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Germany, and the UK, examining early modern guilds and language associations. Responsibilities include writing a PhD thesis in English within four years, contributing to a collaborative research database, publishing at least two peer-reviewed articles, presenting at national and international conferences, and limited teaching in years 2–3.

Applicants should hold an MA, ResMA, or MRes in history, early modern studies, or languages, with a thesis grade of 8.0 or higher (or equivalent). Strong research, writing, and analytical skills are essential, as is an interest in early modern language professions, guilds, and archives. Full professional proficiency in English is required, with reading proficiency (or willingness to learn) in Dutch, French, and/or German; Latin is an asset. Candidates must be willing to spend up to six months in international archives and relocate to the Netherlands. International candidates are encouraged to apply.
