About this position

PhD opportunity at the University of St Andrews in ecoacoustics, freshwater ecology, animal behaviour, and machine learning.

This EASTBIO-funded project, Soundscapes of Recovery: Acoustic Indicators of Ecological Change in Scottish Rivers, aims to pioneer acoustic monitoring for Scottish rivers by developing new methods, building a reference library of freshwater invertebrate sounds and behaviours, and testing acoustic indicators of ecological condition across three contrasting catchments: the Dreel Burn (Fife), the South Esk (Lothian), and the River Peffrey (Highlands).

You will work at the intersection of ecology, conservation, ecoacoustics, zoology, and data science. The project includes recording voluntary and movement-linked sounds from freshwater invertebrates, building machine learning models to detect acoustic signatures in field recordings, and deploying hydrophones alongside macroinvertebrate and water chemistry sampling to assess river health and restoration outcomes.

A 3–6 month CASE placement with Buglife is included, offering experience with conservation practitioners, community groups, and citizen scientists through the Guardians of Our Rivers programme.

Funding: 4-year funded PhD; stipend at UKRI standard rate; UK tuition fees covered; University of St Andrews covers the Home-International fee difference. Open to UK and international students.

Eligibility/requirements: Interest in ecology, conservation, ecoacoustics, neuroethology, environmental monitoring, or data science. No prior acoustics or machine learning experience is required.

How to apply: Complete the EASTBIO EDI survey and application form, then submit an online application via the University of St Andrews portal. Select PhD with internship and include academic qualifications, English language qualification if applicable, and two references.
