About this position

PhD opportunity at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) in electrically driven separation processes, local pH-gradient analysis, electrochemical interfaces, and membrane science.

This PhD project is part of a collaborative initiative coordinated by the Institute for Sustainable Process Technology (ISPT) and aims to replace conventional chemical processing aids by using electric fields to generate local pH gradients and electrostatic molecular interactions. The research focuses on understanding how electrically induced pH gradients behave at critical interfaces such as electrodes and membranes, and how these phenomena affect separation performance, membrane durability, energy demand, and process sustainability.

You will join the Bazyar Lab in the Department of Chemical Engineering, section of Catalysis, Separation, and Electrochemical Engineering (CaSE), under the supervision of Dr. Hanieh Bazyar, and collaborate with Dr. Jouke Dykstra at Wageningen University as well as industrial partners from the Dutch food, paper, and chemical sectors.

Research topics include visualizing and quantifying local pH gradients using Fluorescence Lifetime Imaging Microscopy (FLIM), studying transport phenomena in membranes, integrating experimental observations with electrode characterization data, developing membrane modification strategies for improved performance and antifouling, and building physics-informed 2D simulations of local pH gradients.

The position is suitable for candidates with an MSc in Chemical Engineering, Process Engineering, Applied Physics, Physical Chemistry, or a closely related field. Helpful experience includes electrochemical systems, electrically driven separation technologies, membrane processes, transport phenomena, FLIM, 2D computational modeling, and custom experimental setup design. Strong English communication skills are required.

The appointment is for 4 years in principle, with an initial 1.5-year contract followed by a 2.5-year extension subject to a positive go/no-go assessment. Salary ranges from €3204 to €4051 gross per month, plus holiday allowance and an end-of-year bonus. TU Delft also mentions health insurance discounts and a monthly work costs contribution.

Application deadline: 18 October 2026. Apply online through the TU Delft careers portal and upload a motivation letter, CV, an English abstract of your MSc thesis, and your MSc diploma with academic supplement. Shortlisted applicants will be asked for two referees.
