About this position

Postdoc position in electrocarboxylation of furan derivatives at the Department of Chemical Engineering and Chemistry, Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), in the Netherlands.

The project focuses on sustainable chemistry, CO2 utilization, biomass-derived feedstocks, and the development of selective and scalable electrochemical processes. The postdoctoral researcher will work on converting furan derivatives into value-added products such as 2-furyl(hydroxy)acetic acid and 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA).

Research tasks include identifying suitable electrode materials, optimizing reaction conditions, electrolyte composition, and solvents in three-electrode configurations and organic carbonate-based media, then translating the chemistry to continuous-flow electrochemical cells while studying selectivity, reaction rates, mass transport, and process stability.

The research environment is the Electrocatalytic Synthesis and Electrochemical Interfaces (ESEI) group, with collaboration from dr Neira d’Angelo on reaction and catalysis engineering. The broader team works on electrocatalysis, electro(catalytic) synthesis, heterogeneous catalysis, materials design, and sustainable chemical manufacturing from waste substrates such as CO2 and biomass.

Eligibility highlights: PhD in electrochemistry, electrocatalysis, or a comparable field; strong academic research output; teamwork and mentoring ability; project management skills; excellent English; communication and leadership skills.

Funding and conditions: full-time fixed-term appointment for 2 years. Salary ranges from €4,422 to €5,760 gross per month (scale 10), plus holiday allowance, year-end bonus, pension, training, childcare access, commuting/work-from-home/internet allowances, and possible expat/moving support.

Application: deadline is 2026-10-02. Apply through the AcademicTransfer vacancy page. Contact Marta Costa Figueiredo for role-specific questions or HR Services for application-process questions.
