About this position
Wageningen University & Research is advertising a fully funded PhD in electrochemistry, chemical engineering, membrane processes, transport phenomena, and water technology. The project is titled “PhD Replacing Chemicals with Electricity: Engineering Local pH Environments” and is embedded in the Environmental Technology group, within the Electrified Interfaces research group.
The research asks how electricity can replace acids, bases, detergents, and other chemicals used in industrial cleaning and separations. You will study how local pH environments develop near electrodes and membranes in electrochemical systems, and how these conditions depend on water composition, electrode materials, and membrane materials. The project combines theory, modelling, and experiments to develop design principles for electrically driven, chemical-free technologies.
You will work in the ECO consortium (Electrically-driven Chemical-free Operations), together with the Institute for Sustainable Process Technology, the University of Twente, TU Delft, the University of Groningen, the University of Copenhagen, Wageningen University & Research, and industrial partners from the food, chemical, paper, and water sectors. The work is aimed at practical applications in industrial cleaning, product recovery, and separation processes.
Eligibility highlights: a completed MSc in Chemical Engineering, Water Technology, Environmental Technology, Physical Chemistry, Process Engineering, Applied Physics, or a related field; affinity with electrochemistry, membrane processes, colloid and interface science, and/or water technology; experience with experimental methods and/or modelling; excellent English, with C1 level expected.
Funding: fully funded PhD position with a salary from €3,204/month in year 1 to €4,051/month in year 4, plus standard Dutch university employment benefits. The contract is initially for 18 months and may be extended for the project duration.
Application: apply via the vacancy page on the WUR website. Submit a CV (max 2 pages) and motivation letter (max 1 page), with a total maximum of 3 pages. Applications close on 2026-10-26.
