About this position

Doctoral Researcher opening at the University of Luxembourg (Belval Campus) in Energy and Greenhouse Gas Modelling. The project focuses on developing a generalized greenhouse gas (GHG) model across all sectors and integrating it with the sector-coupled energy model UCB-SEnMod. The work is highly interdisciplinary and combines environmental science, physics, engineering, computer science, and mathematical modelling.

The successful candidate will build a spatially and temporally resolved combined model to assess direct and indirect emissions and explore scenarios for reducing GHG emissions, including renewable energy integration. Responsibilities include model architecture and coding, literature review of workflows and data needs, scenario design, documentation and version control, open-source preparation, data analysis, figure preparation, manuscript/report drafting, and presenting results at international conferences. The role also involves collaboration with the Luxembourg Centre for Socio-Environmental Systems and Trier University of Applied Sciences.

Requirements: a master’s degree in physics, chemistry, engineering, environmental sciences, or a related field; familiarity with Python or similar programming and AI tools; strong understanding of physical processes; excellent problem-solving; and initiative. Applicants must show at least B2-level language proficiency in the language of the thesis.

Funding: fixed-term full-time doctoral contract for 36 months with a yearly gross salary of EUR 43,445. Location: Belval Campus, Luxembourg. Applications are reviewed upon receipt, so early application is encouraged.

How to apply: submit a CV, cover letter, transcript of university-level courses and results, a portfolio/list of relevant projects, and a one-page project proposal via the online HR system. Email applications will not be considered.
