About this position

The International Max Planck Research School for Sustainable Metallurgy (SusMet) offers a structured, interdisciplinary PhD programme focused on pioneering carbon-free approaches to metallurgy. The curriculum features basic and advanced lectures covering sustainability in materials, large-scale metallurgical processes, hydrogen-based economy, sustainable synthesis of aluminium and iron, multi-scale modelling, characterisation techniques, mechanics and damage processes, and component life extension. Students participate in Welcome Days, annual retreats, workshops, lab exchanges, soft skill trainings, German language courses, and career development activities. Close supervision is provided, with at least two supervisors from different departments or partner institutes and regular status meetings with the Thesis Advisory Committee (TAC).

Funding is available for three years, with positions at Max Planck Institutes and partner universities offering competitive salaries or scholarships. The programme is open to candidates with an excellent Master’s degree in materials science, physics, engineering, or chemistry, and those with computational backgrounds are especially encouraged. Proof of English proficiency is required. No tuition fees are charged, but a semester contribution of approximately 330 EUR applies. International students receive comprehensive support for visa matters, accommodation, and integration into the scientific community and daily life in Germany.
