About this position
PhD opportunity at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) in the Smart Optical Networks Lab (SONL) of the Electro-Optical Communication group, focused on entanglement routing in quantum optical fiber networks.
The project aims to develop an innovative entanglement-based routing architecture and protocol, and to build an experimental testbed for routing entangled photons in the presence of classical telecom traffic in multi-node quantum optical fiber networks. Research topics include quantum communication, quantum-secure networking, QKD networks, quantum teleportation, frequency conversion, optical switching, network design, and the coexistence of quantum and classical signals.
You will combine theoretical and simulation studies with experimental validation, and investigate impairments such as noise and crosstalk. The project leverages KPN’s expertise to address real-world constraints including scalability, interoperability, reliability, and manageability for telecom-grade quantum networks.
Funding: the PhD position is fully funded by industry partner KPN.
Eligibility/fit: suitable for candidates interested in quantum optics, optical fiber networks, telecom systems, and experimental research. The post also includes teaching support and mentoring BSc/MSc students.
Deadline: 14 November 2026.
