About this position

PhD opportunity at the University of East Anglia (School of Environmental Sciences) on the environmental impacts of next-generation plastics.

This project, supervised by Dr T Tolhurst, focuses on plastic pollution, biodegradable plastics, ecotoxicology, ecology, ecosystem functioning, aquatic ecosystems, marine biology, and microbiology. The research will compare biodegradable plastics, conventional plastics, and paper-based alternatives in laboratory and field experiments, including work in the River Yare (Norfolk) and Breydon Water estuary (Great Yarmouth).

The project aims to test whether newer plastic alternatives are genuinely better for environmental health, using biodiversity assessments, sediment oxygen demand, carbon cycling, and nutrient exchange measurements. The work is linked to policy relevance, including the UK Marine Strategy and UN Sustainable Development Goal 14.

The candidate will join the Centre for Ecology, Evolution, and Conservation group and receive training in experimental design, laboratory and field skills, ecotoxicology, biogeochemical cycling, taxonomy, bioinformatics, statistical analysis, and science communication. External training such as mixed effects modelling may also be available through ARIES.

Eligibility: at least UK equivalent Bachelors (Honours) 2:1. Applicants should be enthusiastic about laboratory and fieldwork, ecology, toxicology, and ecosystem functioning. English language requirement: IELTS 6.5 overall with 6 in each category.

Funding: competition funded PhD project for students worldwide.

Location: Norwich, United Kingdom.

Start date: 1 October 2027.

Interested applicants should register their interest via the FindAPhD enquiry form on the project page.
