About this position

PhD opportunity at the University of Warwick in a CASE project on combined chemical and biological treatments for man-made plastics. The project sits within the Midlands Integrative Biosciences Training Partnership and is supervised by Prof Timothy Bugg and Prof Sébastien Perrier.

This research combines polymer degradation, microbiology, biochemistry, materials science, and polymer chemistry to develop new approaches for recycling and treatment of plastic waste. The work will investigate chemical pre-treatment methods such as Fenton chemistry and biomimetic catalysts, followed by enzymatic or microbial treatment of thermoset polymers and lignin-containing phenol-formaldehyde polymers. The project also includes analysis of degradation products and mechanisms using LC-MS, HPLC, GPC, SEM, RNASeq, and proteomic analysis.

Research interests include plastics degradation, polymer recycling, lignin degradation, enzymatic sulfation, microbial polymer degradation, and the conversion of polymer components into new materials. The project builds on prior work showing bacterial activity against polystyrene and other man-made polymers, and on enzyme-assisted improvements in polymer solubility and breakdown.

This is a funded PhD project and is advertised for students worldwide. The listing states the location as Coventry, United Kingdom. The deadline shown on the page is 2026-11-23.
