About this position

PhD opportunity at the University of New South Wales (UNSW Sydney) in Equitable Cardiovascular Risk Prediction Through Personalised Blood Flow Modelling.

This project sits at the intersection of biomedical engineering, cardiology, mechanical engineering, computer science, mathematics/statistics, and medical science. The research will combine coronary CT imaging, rapid blood flow modelling, machine learning, and clinical outcome data to develop next-generation personalised cardiovascular risk prediction tools. A key theme is improving equity in cardiovascular care, including evaluation across diverse patient populations, with particular attention to women and patients with spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD).

The successful candidate will work with Assoc Prof Susann Beier and the Sydney Vascular Modelling Group (SVMG), an internationally recognised team focused on cardiovascular engineering, artificial intelligence, computational modelling, digital health, medical devices, and precision cardiovascular medicine. The project offers access to large clinical datasets and international collaborations across Australia, Europe, North America, and Asia.

Research tasks include automated coronary artery reconstruction from CT imaging, fast computational models of coronary blood flow, machine learning for cardiovascular outcome prediction, and investigation of novel haemodynamic markers and disease mechanisms in patients without traditional risk factors.

Eligibility highlights: applicants should have a background in biomedical engineering, data science, computer science, mathematics, statistics, or a related discipline. Domestic applicants need First Class Honours (or equivalent) or a research-heavy master’s degree, plus strong academic performance and evidence of research capability. International applicants should typically come from a top-200 global university (or leading research-intensive university in their country), have performance equivalent to UNSW First Class Honours, and preferably have first-author publications or other strong research evidence.

Funding: the project is competition funded and linked to a UNSW PhD Scholarship covering tuition/course fees and a living stipend of about AUD 40,000 per year (indexed annually).

How to apply: email the supervisor with a cover letter, CV, transcripts, and two referee contacts. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis until the position is filled.

What's required

Applicants should have a background in biomedical engineering, data science, computer science, mathematics or statistics, or a related discipline. Domestic applicants (Australia and New Zealand) should have a Bachelor's degree with First Class Honours (H1) or equivalent, or a Master's degree with a substantial research thesis/project, plus a minimum WAM of 75% (or equivalent) and evidence of research capability. International applicants should typically have a Bachelor's degree with Honours or equivalent research-intensive qualification from a top-200 global university (or leading research-intensive university in their country), academic performance equivalent to UNSW First Class Honours (H1e), and ideally one or two first-author publications in high-quality international journals; research excellence through publications, presentations, awards, or research experience is preferred. Preference may be given to applicants already based in Australia or able to commence onshore.

How to apply

Email [email protected] with a cover letter, CV, academic transcripts, and contact details of two referees. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled.
