About this position
PhD opportunity at the Singapore-ETH Centre in Singapore focused on AI, machine learning, deep learning, medical image processing, biomechanics, and hip fracture risk prediction. The project aims to build image-based, data-driven models that predict personalised fracture risk directly from routine bone-density or CT scans, and to extend these models to longitudinal trajectories using repeat imaging and clinical risk factors.
The successful candidate will work within a team developing AI models for musculoskeletal health as part of the Future Health Technologies 2 (FHT2) programme. Core research tasks include developing deep-learning and generative/image-assessment approaches, validating predictions against biomechanical simulations and real-world fracture outcomes, and contributing to co-supervision of MSc and BSc students.
This is a full-time PhD position with funding for up to four years. The PhD degree will be awarded by ETH Zurich, while the employment is at the Singapore-ETH Centre and local working regulations apply. The work location is explicitly stated as 1 Create Way, CREATE Tower, Singapore 138602.
Applicants should have an MSc degree in computer science, engineering, mathematics, physics, or a related quantitative discipline. Strong skills in Python, PyTorch, neural network training/evaluation, and collaborative software development are especially relevant. Experience with HPC clusters is desirable, and familiarity with biomechanics or finite-element modelling is an advantage. English proficiency is required.
To apply, submit the online application portal with a cover letter describing your motivation, a CV including two references, and PDF transcripts. Applications sent by email or post will not be considered. Questions about the position may be directed to Prof. Dr. Benedikt Helgason at [email protected] (no applications by email).

What's required
Applicants should hold an MSc degree in computer science, engineering, mathematics, physics, or a related quantitative discipline. Strong motivation and the ability to work largely independently on complex research topics are required. Applicants should have a strong foundation in machine learning/deep learning and medical image processing, excellent Python programming skills, and prior experience training and evaluating neural network models such as in PyTorch. Familiarity with biomechanics or finite-element modelling is an advantage. Background knowledge in parallel or high-performance computing is desirable, and applicants should be comfortable working on shared HPC clusters. Experience with software engineering practices, including version control and collaborative development workflows, is required. Proficiency in written and spoken English is required.
How to apply
Prepare an online application with a cover letter stating your motivation for the project, a CV including contact information for two references, and university transcripts as PDFs. Submit only through the online application portal; email and postal applications will not be considered.
