About this position

The University of Twente, Faculty of Engineering Technology, is offering a fully funded 4-year PhD position in the Production Technology group, focusing on the experimental assessment of hot deformation and transformation behaviour of greener steel. The research aims to investigate steels with increased tramp elements, using advanced experimental methods such as isothermal resonant ultrasound spectroscopy (IRUS) and x-ray diffraction, to develop new characterization techniques for transformation kinetics. The project is highly relevant to sustainable steel production and involves collaboration with industrial partners and MSc students, as well as opportunities to present findings at international conferences.

Applicants should have an MSc in Materials Science, Applied Physics, Mechanical Engineering (Materials specialization), or a related discipline, with strong academic results and a keen interest in experimental material characterization. Experience with thermophysical and x-ray diffraction measurement methods is highly desirable. Excellent communication skills and English proficiency (IELTS ≥6.5 or TOEFL iBT ≥90) are required. Application materials include a CV, motivation letter, BSc and MSc grades, English test scores, and contact information for two references.

The position offers a competitive salary (€3,059–€3,881 gross/month), 8% holiday allowance, 8.3% year-end bonus, at least 29 days of annual leave, and full employee benefits including pension and healthcare. The intended start date is between May and July 2026. The application deadline is March 1, 2026, and first interviews will be held in the week of March 23, 2026. For more information, contact Assistant Professor Martin Luckabauer at [email protected] or visit the University of Twente careers page.
