About this position

PhD opening at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) in ultracold electron source development for time-resolved protein crystallography.

This project, Cool T-ReX, is an ERC-funded effort to develop a pulsed electron source with extreme transverse bunch brightness based on photo-ionization of laser-cooled atoms. The long-term goal is to create the first laboratory-scale instrument for time-resolved protein crystallography with electrons, enabling molecular movies of protein conformational changes with unprecedented spatial and temporal resolution.

You will work in the Department of Applied Physics and Science Education, within the Coherence and Quantum Technology group, alongside experienced technicians, another PhD student, a PostDoc, and the PI Julius Huijts. The research combines applied physics, charged particle optics, cold atoms, high vacuum, high voltage, and mechanical/optical instrument design.

Eligibility highlights: MSc in Applied Physics, Engineering Physics, Mechatronics with a strong physics component, or similar; strong teamwork and communication skills; initiative and self-organization; research-oriented attitude; affinity with the project goal; and background or proven affinity with at least two of: mechanical and optical design, complex optical setups, charged particle optics, cold atoms, high vacuum, high voltage. Fluent spoken and written English at C1 level is required.

Funding and conditions: full-time employment for four years, with an intermediate assessment after nine months. Salary is in Dutch university scale P (€3,204–€4,051 gross base salary per month), plus 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% year-end bonus. TU/e also offers pension, leave, training, commuting/home-working support, and international staff support.

Location: Eindhoven, Netherlands.

Application: apply online via the TU/e vacancy page. Submit a cover letter, CV including publications, and contact details for three references. The vacancy remains open until filled; priority is given to complete applications. Last application date: 2026-11-21.
