About this position

PhD opportunity at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) in the Smart Optical Networks Lab (SONL) within the Electro-Optics Communication (ECO) group. The project focuses on fast controlled photonic integrated switches for high-performance artificial intelligence compute clusters, with emphasis on optical interconnects, WDM switches, photonic integrated circuits, and low-latency network architectures for AI training systems.

The PhD research includes investigating disruptive optical network architectures, defining system specifications, designing and fabricating photonic switch architectures, developing optoelectronic interfaces and control, and building a small-scale compute-cluster testbed. The work is embedded in a national project with close collaboration with industry and other researchers.

Eligibility highlights: applicants should have an MSc in Electrical Engineering or Applied Physics. Strong background in optical fiber communications, photonic devices and circuits, photonic integration technologies, and software simulation tools is expected. Experience with FPGA programming, laboratory measurement equipment, optical fiber systems, semiconductor devices, and electronic circuits is also requested. Good teamwork, communication skills, English proficiency, and readiness to start as soon as possible are required.

Funding and conditions: this is a 4-year full-time PhD contract with an intermediate assessment after 9 months. Salary is €3,204–€4,051 gross per month (scale P), plus holiday allowance and year-end bonus. TU/e also offers pension, leave, training, commuting/work-from-home support, and other employee benefits.

Location: De Zaale, Eindhoven, Netherlands.

Deadline: 2026-10-05.
