About this position

PhD opportunity at Mines Paris-PSL, within the PERSEE Center and the ERSEI group, in Sophia Antipolis, France. The thesis is titled “Foundation Models for Flexible and Safe Operation of Multi-Energy Systems” and focuses on foundation models, artificial intelligence, energy digitalization, multi-energy systems, operational safety, and flexibility.

The project explores foundation models as surrogate models for multi-energy system optimization, supporting decisions such as flexibility booking and security-constrained optimal power and energy flows. The research combines dataset construction, self-supervised learning, fine-tuning, physics-inspired machine learning, explainability, uncertainty quantification, and validation through hardware-in-the-loop experiments.

Applicants should have an engineer and/or Master of Science degree. Candidates may apply before the degree is formally obtained, but the PhD starts only after successful completion. A strong background in at least two areas among AI, data science, machine learning, power system management, renewable integration, applied mathematics, statistics/probabilities, optimization, and energy forecasting is expected. Programming skills are required, with good French preferred and excellent English expected.

Funding is provided through the PEPR FutuRE project under France 2030 (other public funding). The application asks for a CV, motivation letter, transcripts, last diploma, and contact details for two referees. The deadline is 2026-10-18, and the position remains open until a suitable candidate is found.
