About this position

Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam is advertising a 4-year PhD position in the Cognitive Psychology section of the Department of Experimental and Applied Psychology, based in Amsterdam, Netherlands.

The project, “The Role of Foveal Processing in Spatial Attention,” is an NWO-funded study on visual attention, foveal processing, visual perception, eye movements, and psychophysics. The PhD candidate will design and run behavioural and psychophysical experiments, collect and analyse behavioural and eye-tracking data, and contribute to publications, conference presentations, and the PhD thesis.

The work is embedded in an interdisciplinary environment with access to eye-tracking and EEG/eye-tracking labs, plus links to the Spinoza Centre for Neuroimaging and its 3T/7T MRI facilities. The project is supervised by Dr. M. Donk and Prof. Dr. H. Slagter.

Eligibility highlights: a completed or nearly completed Research Master’s/Master’s degree in a relevant field; strong interest in attention and perception; experience with experimental research, statistics, and programming; familiarity with R, Python, MATLAB, or similar tools; and excellent English. Experience with Bayesian statistics, computational modelling, preregistration, FAIR data, OSF, or GitHub is a plus.

Funding: full-time salaried PhD employment, starting at €3,204 gross/month and rising to €4,051 gross/month in year four. The initial contract is for one year and may be extended to four years.

Deadline: 30 September 2026. Preferred start date is between 1 November 2026 and 1 January 2027.

Funding details
