About this position
PhD Position F/M: Frugal Distributed Training with Volatile Resources at Inria Centre at Université Côte d’Azur (NEO project-team), Sophia Antipolis, France, in collaboration with the ARGO project-team and Hivenet/Antimatter.
This PhD focuses on distributed training, federated learning, optimization, stochastic processes, and resource-aware machine learning. The thesis aims to design new algorithms for AI training on volatile, heterogeneous, and intermittently available computing resources, with attention to training time, accuracy, communication cost, and potentially energy/carbon impact.
The research includes modeling resource availability from traces or measurements, designing scheduling and training strategies, proving convergence and performance guarantees, and evaluating methods in simulation and in Hivenet-like conditions. The environment is interdisciplinary, combining machine learning, distributed optimization, federated learning, and large-scale distributed infrastructures.
Supervision is by Giovanni Neglia (Inria NEO), Laurent Massoulié (Inria ARGO), and Igor Carrara (Hivenet / Antimatter).
Eligibility highlights: graduate degree or equivalent, strong mathematical background, good Python programming skills, and fluency in English. Experience with PyTorch, TensorFlow, JAX, distributed learning systems, stochastic modeling, scheduling, or energy-aware computing is a plus.
Funding: fixed-term PhD contract for 36 months with a gross salary of 2300 EUR/month. Location: Sophia Antipolis, France. Deadline to apply: 2026-10-25.
