About this position
PhD opportunity at University College Dublin in Generative AI for Novel Downstream Process Design in Biomanufacturing. This funded PhD project is hosted by the School of Chemical & Bioprocess Engineering at University College Dublin (UCD), Dublin, Ireland.
The project is multidisciplinary and combines generative AI, machine learning, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), biomanufacturing, downstream processing, chemical engineering, bioprocess engineering, and systems engineering. The research aims to develop generative AI strategies for the innovative design of downstream processing unit operations, using a closed design loop to optimise novel unit-operation configurations and to align computational models with experimental observations.
Eligibility highlights: applicants should hold an MSc in chemical engineering, bioprocess engineering, artificial intelligence, machine learning, systems engineering, or a related discipline. Strong Python skills and experience with machine learning frameworks are expected, especially in generative AI. Prior CFD experience is highly desirable.
Funding: the position is fully funded and includes a monthly stipend plus a dedicated research budget to support international conferences, workshops, research expenses, and equipment.
Application: prepare a single PDF with your CV, academic transcripts, and letter of motivation. Email it to Dr. Sebastián Espinel Ríos at sebastian.espinelrios@ucd.ie. Applications are accepted all year round, and the anticipated start date is flexible between October 2026 and May 2027.
