About this position

PhD scholarship in Bioprocess Engineering at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU), Faculty of Science and Technology, Department of Physics, in Ås, Norway.

The project, fermentAtIon: AI controlled fermentation for microbial lipid production, focuses on building an AI-driven digital twin for real-time fermentation monitoring, prediction, and control. The successful candidate will work on integrating data from online spectroscopy, standard bioreactor sensors, and lab-scale fermentation experiments across oleaginous microorganisms, and will develop chemometric and physics-informed machine learning models for process optimization.

Research topics include fermentation modelling, process kinetics, machine learning, deep learning, control engineering, chemometrics, spectroscopy (Raman/FTIR), and bioprocess data analysis. The role also includes experimental work such as batch, fed-batch, and continuous cultivations, infrared microscopy, HPLC/GC analyses, and model benchmarking for robust deployment in real environments.

This is a 3-year PhD position with a desired start date of 1 October 2026. Salary is 550,800 NOK as a PhD Research Fellow, with possible increase for exceptionally qualified candidates. Admission to the PhD program is required before appointment.

Required background includes a relevant Master’s degree in Bioprocess Engineering, Biochemical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Systems/Control Engineering, Applied Biotechnology, or a related field; strong English proficiency; and documented experience in process modelling, scientific computing, and data analysis. Preferred experience includes machine learning, control, spectroscopy, chemometrics, analytical chemistry, microbiology, and fermentation operations.

Apply online through Jobbnorge by the deadline 30 September 2026. Prepare a motivation letter, CV, certified diplomas/transcripts, English translations if needed, proof of English proficiency, and any additional relevant documentation.
