About this position

NTNU (Norwegian University of Science and Technology) is advertising a PhD position in Geography focused on post-fossil fuel transitions in petroleum-producing nations. The position is based in the Department of Geography and Social Anthropology and is linked to the research group Geographies of Just and Sustainable Transitions as well as NTNU Energy’s focus area Beyond the Fossil Fuel Era.

The project examines the contradictions and dilemmas democratic states face as they navigate uncertainty around the pace and direction of fossil-fuel decline. Possible angles include energy geographies, cultural political economy, sustainability transitions, institutional legacies, vested interests, labor, expertise, and civil society. Candidates may focus on Norway or conduct a comparative study with other petroleum-producing democracies such as the United Kingdom, Indonesia, or Australia.

This is a three-year fixed-term PhD Candidate position. The salary is normally NOK 580,000 per year depending on qualifications and seniority. The post includes working capital and access to NTNU employee benefits, career guidance, and a mentor programme.

Eligibility highlights include a relevant master’s degree in Human Geography, Science and Technology Studies, Political Science, or an equivalent social science field; a strong academic record; fluent English; experience with qualitative research methods; and a strong research proposal. Norwegian/Scandinavian B2-level presentation skills and quantitative methods/social network analysis are preferred.

The application deadline is 2026-12-01. Apply through Jobbnorge and upload transcripts, diplomas, CV, master’s thesis or draft, a project outline (max 1500 words/4 pages), relevant publications, and referee contacts.
