About this position

KU Leuven is advertising a fully funded PhD vacancy in the Laser Manufacturing Group at the Department of Mechanical Engineering in Leuven, Belgium. The position is part of the MSCA Doctoral Network TURBO-IMPACT and focuses on high-precision, crack-free femtosecond laser material removal for ceramic materials and advanced surface features.

The research topic combines mechanical engineering, materials engineering, laser micromachining, surface texturing, tribology, and predictive modelling. The doctoral candidate will use KU Leuven’s ultrashort-pulse laser facilities to develop crack-free laser texturing strategies, build models linking laser parameters to feature geometry and crack formation, and study how laser-generated textures affect bonded ceramic-ceramic and ceramic-metal interfaces.

The project is embedded in the EU-funded TURBO-IMPACT consortium, which addresses manufacturing and design challenges for small-scale turbomachinery used in heat pumps, fuel cells, organic Rankine cycles, and gas turbines. The PhD includes training activities, workshops, international conferences, and secondments to partner locations in Neuchâtel (Switzerland), Jena (Germany), Padova (Italy), and an industrial partner in Belgium.

Eligibility highlights: applicants need a two-year master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing, Materials Engineering, Photonics, Physics, or a related field; they must not already hold a PhD; they must meet the MSCA Mobility Rule; and they should have strong English skills. Experience with laser material processing, manufacturing, mechanical behaviour of materials, or CAE tools such as COMSOL or ANSYS is desirable.

Funding: the position is fully funded under MSCA-DN rules and includes a competitive salary, mobility and family allowances where applicable, full social security coverage, and paid leave.

Application deadline: 30 November 2026, 23:59 CET. Apply via the KU Leuven online application tool and include a CV, motivation letter, and academic transcripts/grade lists; optional supporting documents include English proficiency proof, reference letters, and an English version of a thesis or publication.

What's required

Applicants must have a two-year master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing or Materials Engineering, Photonics, Physics, or a related field with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree. Candidates must not already hold a doctoral degree and must satisfy the MSCA Mobility Rule, meaning they must not have resided or carried out their main activity in Belgium for more than 12 months during the 36 months immediately preceding recruitment. Strong English proficiency is required. Relevant experience or strong interest in laser material processing, manufacturing, and mechanical behaviour of materials is expected; experience with COMSOL, ANSYS, or similar CAE software is considered ideal. Applicants should be precise, detail-oriented, initiative-taking, responsible, and collaborative.

How to apply

Apply through the KU Leuven online job application tool. Submit a full CV, motivation letter, full list of BSc and MSc credits and grades (with English translation if possible), and optionally proof of English proficiency, two reference letters, and an English version of your MSc thesis, recent publication, or assignment.
