About this position

TU Delft is advertising a PhD position in high-resolution transmission electron imaging in scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The project aims to democratize transmission electron imaging by developing a compact, affordable projection system that can bring advanced TE techniques—such as electron diffraction, low-energy STEM, and phase-contrast imaging—to conventional SEM platforms.

You will join the Gheidari Lab within the Microscopy Instrumentation and Techniques (MInT) Group in the Department of Imaging Physics at Delft University of Technology, and work closely with industrial partner Delmic. The research combines electron optics, MEMS technology, microscopy instrumentation, imaging physics, numerical simulation, hardware development, and experimental validation. The project includes modelling and optimizing a transmission electron projection column, designing and fabricating miniaturized electron-optical components, and testing a prototype inside an SEM.

The programme is structured over four years. In the first phase, you will build analytical and numerical models and develop Python-based modelling tools. In the second phase, you will help design and realize the components using MEMS fabrication, precision machining, electronics, and vacuum hardware. In the final phase, you will assemble, test, and validate the prototype and compare measurements with simulations. The role offers strong exposure to both academic research and industrial innovation.

Eligibility highlights: an MSc in Applied Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related field; strong skills in numerical modelling, simulation, and data analysis; a solid background in physics, optics, electron optics, MEMS, experimental physics, and microscopy systems; good English communication; and enthusiasm for mentoring BSc/MSc students and presenting research internationally.

Funding and conditions: this is a paid doctoral employment position for 4 years, with salary from €3059 to €3881 gross per month, plus holiday allowance and an end-of-year bonus. TU Delft also mentions health insurance discounts, a monthly work costs contribution, flexible work schedules, and relocation support to the Netherlands.
