About this position
Postdoctoral opening at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) for a researcher in electron optics, electron microscopy, charged-particle optics, and scientific instrumentation.
The position is part of BEAMSurf: Diffractive Atomic-Scale Surface Imaging with Backscattered Electrons, an ERC Starting Grant project led by Dr. Georgios Varnavides in the Curious Beams Lab within the Microscopy and Instrumentation Techniques (MInT) cluster, Department of Imaging Physics, Faculty of Applied Sciences.
The project aims to develop a new scanning electron microscope concept that uses coherent backscattered electrons for diffractive imaging of material surfaces. The postdoc will take technical and scientific ownership of instrument development, including electron-optical design, electromagnetic and ray-tracing simulations, MEMS and nanofabrication, vacuum technology, detector integration, commissioning, and experimental demonstration.
You will work closely with two PhD candidates: one focused on experimental imaging and microscope characterization, and another on computational imaging and reconstruction methods. The role also involves collaboration with the PI and an electron-optics technician. Access is provided to a new high-vacuum SEM acquired primarily for this project, plus broader electron microscopy infrastructure at TU Delft.
Ideal candidates have a PhD in physics, applied physics, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, materials science, or a closely related field, plus a strong background in experimental physics, electron optics, electron microscopy, charged-particle optics, or instrumentation. Experience with numerical simulation, scientific programming, electromagnetic modelling, MEMS, nanofabrication, vacuum systems, detector technology, or experimental microscopy is especially valuable.
This is a 2.5-year temporary postdoc with a salary range of €3706–€5760 per month under the Dutch university collective agreement. The project is EU funded. The expected start date is in the first half of 2027.
Application deadline: 8 November 2026. Apply online and upload a motivation letter, CV, PhD thesis abstract (or equivalent research summary), and MSc/Bachelor transcripts. Applications by email or post will not be processed.
