About this position

IMT Mines Albi is advertising a PhD position on the high-temperature kinetics, thermodynamics, and thermophysical properties of graphitic biomass-derived biocarbon (biochar), with applications in energy storage. The work is hosted at the RAPSODEE Center (Research of Albi in Process Engineering of Divided Solids, Energy and Environment), a CNRS joint research unit focused on processes, materials, and sustainable energies.

This PhD is part of an ERC Advanced Grant project. The research aims to evaluate the storage capacity of innovative biocarbon composites made from biomass, with the broader goal of supporting sustainable energy technologies and reducing reliance on fossil-based materials. The project includes an international environment with research visits to partner laboratories in France, India, and the USA.

The thesis will combine thermodynamic and kinetic modelling, experimental measurements, and machine learning to predict and optimize the properties of biochar-based materials. Topics include dissolution-precipitation, grain nucleation and growth, stability during formation, multi-component phase diagrams, and the relationship between measurable macro-properties, molecular descriptors, and microstructural information. Experimental techniques mentioned include XRD, XPS, TGA-DSC, N2 sorption, SEM-EDS, HR-TEM, Raman spectroscopy, and NMR spectroscopy.

Eligibility highlights: applicants should hold a Master’s degree or equivalent in chemical engineering, materials engineering, materials science, or physical chemistry. A background in thermodynamics and/or kinetic modelling is expected, along with programming skills for data analysis, scientific computing, uncertainty computation, model optimization, and machine learning. Experience with materials characterization is strongly preferred, and good written and oral English communication skills are required.

The position is based in Albi, Occitanie, France, and is offered as a 36-month fixed-term contract (CDD). The deadline is 31 August 2026. Required documents are a CV, cover letter, and 1 or 2 recommendation letters. Applications should be submitted via the job portal, and questions can be directed to [email protected].
