About this position
PhD opportunity at The Francis Crick Institute with Dr Philippa Matthews in the Hepatitis B elimination lab.
This funded PhD project focuses on host-virus interactions and the outcomes of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. The project spans wet-lab work, clinical cohorts, big data, epidemiology, genomics, immunology, and biomarker discovery, with a strong translational and global health angle.
Research themes include:
- Host and pathogen genetics in HBV infection
- Whole genome sequencing and analysis of HBV and host sequence data
- Viral resistance, especially to antiviral therapy such as tenofovir
- Biomarkers for risk stratification and disease progression
- Mechanisms underlying spontaneous clearance, chronic infection, cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma
- Lipidomics and metabolic liver disease as modifiers of HBV outcomes
- Collaboration with the B-ZERO programme and partners in Africa, including Ethiopia and South Africa
The project is embedded in international collaborations across Africa and the WHO African region, and the successful candidate will work in an interdisciplinary team. The final project focus will be shaped with the student according to their interests and expertise.
Ideal candidate profile: background in infection-related research, with interests in virology, genomics, liver disease/cancer, immunology, the host-pathogen interface, and/or global health. Data handling and analysis skills are helpful but not required.
Funding: fully funded PhD with a non-taxable annual stipend of £27,715 plus university tuition fees.
Eligibility: students of all nationalities may apply.
Location: London, United Kingdom.
Application: respond to the project listing and address the lab-specific question about your experience and research interests in hepatitis B.
