About this position
PhD opportunity at Cardiff University in the Cardiff School of Medicine on optimising immune responses against emerging viruses.
This project focuses on immunology, virology, infectious diseases, and vaccine development, with particular attention to viruses transmitted by biting insects and the emerging pathogens Oropouche and Mayaro. The research aims to identify which immune responses are most effective for controlling these pathogens and to build the knowledge base needed for future vaccine development against (re)emerging viral threats.
The project is hosted by Cardiff University and supervised by Prof Richard Stanton, Dr Ceri Fielding, and Dr Edward Wang.
Eligibility: applicants should have, or be about to obtain, a first or upper second-class UK honours degree, or an equivalent qualification from outside the UK. The studentship is open to UK and international applicants.
Funding: fully funded studentship via the GW4 BioMed3 MRC Doctoral Landscape Programme, covering UK tuition fees plus a doctoral stipend matching the UK Research Council National Minimum (£21,805 p.a. for 2026/27, updated annually). Additional research training and support funding of up to £5,000 per year is also available.
English language: IELTS overall 6.5 with 5.5 in all subskills, or an acceptable alternative.
