About this position
PhD opportunity at Maastricht University in humin-based recyclable networks for adhesive and composite applications.
The project is hosted by the Aachen-Maastricht Institute for Biobased Materials (AMIBM), Faculty of Science and Engineering, Maastricht University, and is part of the NWO project KICHumins. The research sits at the intersection of chemistry, materials science, chemical engineering, and environmental science, with a strong focus on sustainable polymer design.
You will work in the group of Professor Katrien Bernaerts on the synthesis and design of biobased polymer materials with tunable properties and recyclability. The project uses humins from industrial partners to develop recyclable, non-persistent thermoset resins, then studies their physico-chemical properties and suitability for composites (including skis) and adhesives (including timber panels).
The role also includes assessing degradation products and leachates with ecotoxicological assays, and considering persistence, fate, bioaccumulation, LCA, and risk assessment to support safe-and-sustainable-by-design materials. The broader project also involves societal and business-model aspects across the value chain.
Eligibility highlights: MSc in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related field; strong background in organic synthesis, polymer synthesis, and chemical characterization; interest in rheology, DMA, tensile testing, and structure-property relationships; excellent scientific English; collaborative and hands-on mindset.
Funding: 12-month initial contract with the prospect of a 3-year extension; gross monthly salary €3,204–€4,051 plus holiday allowance and year-end bonus.
Location: Maastricht University / Brightlands-Chemelot Campus in Geleen, Netherlands.
Deadline: 18 September 2026. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis and may close early if a suitable candidate is found.
How to apply: Submit the required documents via AcademicTransfer: CV, motivation letter, referee contacts, and degree/transcript copies. Apply as soon as possible.
