About this position

This project sits at the intersection of forensic science, polymer chemistry, materials science, biomedical engineering, and molecular biology. The research aims to develop biodegradable polymer-based hydrogels for efficient capture and preservation of latent DNA and trace biomarkers from touch evidence. Using biopolymers such as carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and chitosan, the project will design tunable hydrogel systems with improved adsorption capacity and biomolecule stability. The goal is to create a novel, non-destructive forensic sampling technology that improves trace evidence recovery.
Supervision team: Main supervisor Associate Professor Pushpamalar Janarthanan (Monash University), with associate supervisors Dr. Ang Chee Wei and Professor Wu Ta Yeong.
Funding: Successful applicants will be awarded the Graduate Research Excellence Scholarship (GRES), which includes a full tuition fee waiver and a monthly stipend for up to 3 years 6 months.
Eligibility: Applicants must hold at least First Class Honours (H1) or an equivalent qualification recognised by Monash University Malaysia, and must meet the university’s English language requirements.
