About this position

Karolinska Institutet is advertising a doctoral student position in immunometabolism and functional HIV cure within the Systems Virology Lab and the Center for Systems Infection Biology at the Department of Laboratory Medicine. The project, Immunometabolism and metabolic engineering for a functional HIV cure (DC15), is part of the MERIT MSCA Doctoral Network and focuses on HIV persistence, latency reactivation, immune dysfunction, and host-directed metabolic strategies.

The research uses advanced organoid systems, clinical cohorts, immune phenotype fingerprinting, and multi-omics approaches to study how AKG homeostasis and immunometabolic pathways influence HIV-1 persistence in tissues. The doctoral student will investigate mechanisms of metabolic alterations, identify microenvironmental determinants of persistence, and evaluate strategies to disrupt HIV reservoirs in physiologically relevant tissue and organoid models.

Supervision will be provided by Dr. Iva Filipovic (main supervisor) and Dr. Ujjwal Neogi. Planned secondments include work with Prof. Balpreet Singh Ahluwalia at the University of Oslo and Prof. Rajkumar Savai at JLU in Germany. The network also offers scientific meetings, workshops, transferable-skills training, and international networking.

Eligibility: a master’s degree or equivalent advanced-level qualification is required, along with English proficiency equivalent to English B/English 6 and strong written/oral English skills. Applicants must also meet MSCA mobility rules and must not already hold a doctoral degree. Helpful experience includes immunology, viral immunology, virus-host interaction studies, cell/organoid culture, molecular biology, sequencing-based methods, flow cytometry, microscopy, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, and R programming.

Funding: the position is a doctoral studentship with a contractual salary for up to 4 years full-time. KI applies a salary scale for doctoral students.

Application deadline: 30 October 2026. Apply via the Varbi recruitment system and Euraxess, and include a personal letter, CV, degree projects/publications if any, supporting documents for desirable skills, and proof of eligibility.
