About this position
Doctoral student position in immunometabolism for alphavirus therapeutics at Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, Sweden.
The project is hosted by the Systems Virology Lab and the Center for Systems Infection Biology in the Department of Laboratory Medicine. The research focuses on how alphaviruses such as chikungunya virus reprogram host-cell metabolism and immune responses, and how these changes can be exploited to identify host-directed antiviral therapies.
The doctoral project, Immunometabolic Engineering for Next-Generation Alphavirus Therapeutics (DC12), is part of the MERIT MSCA Doctoral Network. The work combines virology, immunometabolism, molecular and cellular biology, iPSC-derived macrophage models, organoids, multi-omics, metabolic modelling, and advanced microscopy. The student will define temporal immunopathogenesis, identify actionable host-directed targets, and validate candidates in human neuronal organoid models.
Supervision is by Dr. Ujjwal Neogi and Dr. Iva Filipovic. Planned secondments include advanced microscopy with Prof. Balpreet Singh Ahluwalia at the University of Oslo and organoid work with Dr. Adithya Sridhar at Amsterdam UMC.
Eligibility requires a relevant master’s degree or equivalent, strong English proficiency, and MSCA Doctoral Network mobility/degree conditions. Helpful experience includes mammalian cell culture, iPSC-derived models, organoids, virology, microscopy, omics, and R programming.
The position is a doctoral studentship with salary for up to 4 years full-time. Applications must be submitted through both the MERIT careers page and the Karolinska Institutet Varbi system. Deadline: 2026-10-30.

What's required
Applicants must have a second-cycle/advanced/master qualification, or at least 240 credits with at least 60 credits at advanced/second-cycle/master level, or equivalent knowledge. English proficiency equivalent to Swedish upper secondary English B/English 6 is required, with excellent oral and written English skills (minimum C1/C2 CEFR level). Applicants must also meet MSCA Doctoral Network eligibility: they must not already hold a doctoral degree and must comply with the mobility rule of not having resided or carried out their main activity in Sweden for more than 12 months in the 36 months immediately before employment. Strong interest in virus-host interactions, molecular virology, immunology, and cell biology is expected; advantageous experience includes mammalian cell culture, iPSC-derived models, organoids, virology, molecular/cellular biology, fluorescence/confocal microscopy, omics technologies, and R programming.
How to apply
Apply through both the MERIT website and Karolinska Institutet’s Varbi recruitment system. Submit the required documents, including a personal letter, CV, degree projects/publications if any, and documents proving general and specific eligibility. The application is only complete once both submissions have been made.
