About this position

Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) is recruiting a PhD candidate for a project on in vitro approaches to assess the health impacts of urban air pollution. The position is based in Belvaux, Luxembourg, within the Environmental Health group of the SUSTAIN Unit, and is embedded in a European Horizon Europe project focused on improving urban air quality management and health impact assessment.

The PhD will combine environmental science, public health, biology, and biomedical engineering with a strong emphasis on in vitro toxicology, human airway cell models, air-liquid interface (ALI) exposure systems, New Approach Methodologies (NAMs), and links between environmental exposure data and biological responses. The work includes developing and validating high-throughput inhalation toxicology methods, reporter assays, and exposure-response models, while contributing to a Human Health Impact Toolkit for urban environments.

The successful candidate will work with LIST supervisors and collaborate with a co-supervisor, Dr. Muriel Mercier-Bonin (INRAE / University of Toulouse, France). The post is also associated with Dr. Sebastien Cambier at LIST. The research environment is multidisciplinary and international, with opportunities to publish, present at conferences, and engage with consortium partners, municipalities, and public health authorities.

Eligibility highlights: a Master’s degree in cell biology, toxicology, molecular biology, biochemistry, biomedical sciences, or a related field; experience in cell culture is required; English fluency is required; a B2 English certificate is mandatory unless the degree was fully taught in English; the master diploma must be recognized in France.

Funding and conditions: fixed-term PhD contract for 36 months, full-time (40 hours/week). LIST offers paid leave, health insurance, and other employee benefits.
