About this position

Maastricht University in the Netherlands is recruiting a PhD candidate for an interdisciplinary project on induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC), organoids, stem cell differentiation, biomaterials, and 3D cell culture.

The project sits within the Department of Complex Tissue Regeneration (CTR) at the MERLN Institute for Technology-Inspired Regenerative Medicine. The research focuses on controlling stem cell differentiation through mechanical stimulation to develop improved 3D cell models and gain new insights into stem cell biology and complex tissue regeneration.

You will work on iPSC culture, maintenance, methodology, data analysis, biological assays, and 3D cell culture on 3D-printed scaffolds. The role also involves disseminating results through peer-reviewed publications and international conference presentations.

Relevant technical areas include additive manufacturing, bioprinting, digital light processing, electrospinning, hydrogels, lithography, bottom-up tissue engineering, and scaffold-free self-assembled tissues or organ spheroids.

Eligibility highlights: an M.Sc. in stem cell biology, biomedical science, or biomedical engineering; proven iPSC experience; and strong scientific English. Experience with biomaterials and advanced fabrication methods is a strong advantage.

Funding details: 12-month contract with a possible 3-year extension, salary €3,059–€3,881 gross per month, plus holiday allowance and year-end bonus.

Deadline: 23 August 2026. Apply via AcademicTransfer with a CV, motivation letter, referee contacts, and transcript.
