About this position

Maastricht University in the Netherlands is recruiting a PhD candidate for research on induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC), organoids, stem cell biology, biomaterials, and 3D cell culture. The project sits in the Department of Complex Tissue Regeneration (CTR) within the MERLN Institute for Technology-Inspired Regenerative Medicine and focuses on how mechanical stimulation can guide stem cell differentiation into different lineages.

The successful candidate will work on iPSC culture, maintenance, methodology, data analysis, and the development of new biological assays and 3D cell models, including 3D-printed scaffolds and other advanced tissue-engineering platforms. The post is highly interdisciplinary and connects stem cell biology with biomedical engineering and materials science.

Eligibility highlights include an M.Sc. degree in stem cell biology, biomedical science, or a related biomedical engineering background. Applicants should have proven experience in iPSC culture and characterization, with additional experience in culturing iPSCs on biomaterials in 2D and 3D considered a strong advantage. Excellent scientific English is required. Experience with additive manufacturing, electrospinning, lithography, bottom-up tissue engineering, and scaffold-free 3D tissues or organ spheroids is also desirable.

Funding details: the role is a temporary PhD contract for 12 months initially, with the prospect of a 3-year extension based on mutual satisfaction. Salary is €3,059–€3,881 gross per month for a 38-hour week, plus holiday allowance and a year-end bonus.

Application deadline: 23 August 2026. To apply, submit a CV, motivation letter, referee contact details, and grade transcript via the AcademicTransfer application portal. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
