About this position

This PhD project at Sheffield Hallam University focuses on developing integrated sulphation removal and mineral matrix consolidation treatments for pollution-induced stone deterioration, particularly in iconic historical limestone buildings. The research addresses the pressing issue of stone fabric degradation caused by environmental pollutants, acidic rain, and climate change, which leads to the formation of damaging black crusts (sulphation) on heritage structures.

The project is part of a Graduate Teaching Assistantship (GTA) scheme, where the successful candidate will contribute up to 180 hours per academic year to teaching or research support activities, alongside their doctoral research. The research aims to develop smarter, more effective, and less invasive conservation treatments that can simultaneously remove sulphation and consolidate the underlying stone, offering long-term protection against further environmental damage.

Key objectives include: (1) developing advanced stone conservation treatments at Sheffield Hallam University, (2) trialing these treatments on deteriorated stone at Canterbury Cathedral and Gloucester Cathedral, and (3) promoting cutting-edge research in built heritage conservation. The project is structured into five work packages, covering the development and characterization of new treatments, laboratory and onsite testing, performance assessment using non-destructive techniques, and dissemination of findings for potential commercialisation.

Applicants should have a strong background in built heritage conservation, materials science and engineering, or a related discipline, with at least a 1st or 2:1 Honours degree. The project encourages applications from underrepresented groups in postgraduate research. International applicants must meet English language requirements (IELTS 7, minimum 6.5 in all areas, or equivalent, taken within the last two years).

The GTA scholarship covers tuition fees for both UK and international students and provides a maintenance bursary (£22,152 for 2025/26), supporting 3.5 years of full-time study.
