About this position
Doctoral Candidate (DC3): Understanding ion adsorption and transfer in electrodes on the nanoscale (f/m/d) at the INM-Leibniz Institute for New Materials in Saarbrücken, Germany.
This PhD project focuses on electrochemistry, materials science, and nanoscale interface characterization for next-generation energy devices. The selected candidate will develop operando scanning TEM (STEM) and EELS methods to study ion adsorption, electric double-layer formation, and electrolyte behavior in nanoconfined environments using room-temperature ionic liquids (ILs). The work includes carbon nanotubes, 3D porous carbons, and bias-dependent behavior in confinement.
The project combines spatially resolved STEM/EELS with volumetric measurements from NMR and operando XPS to directly observe and quantify charge-storage mechanisms and electrolyte degradation. The candidate will collaborate with DC5 on atomistic simulations to build a comprehensive understanding of structure and dynamics at solid-liquid interfaces across states of charge.
Training and secondments include work at P&L Scientific (NMR cell studies, 5 months) and the University of Leiden (correlative TEM/XPS design, 3 months). The selected candidate must enroll in a PhD program at Saarland University.
Eligibility highlights: applicants must not already hold a doctoral degree and must not have lived or carried out their main activity in Germany for more than 12 months in the 36 months before recruitment. A master’s degree or equivalent in Materials Science, Electrochemistry, Chemistry, Applied Physics, or a closely related field is required. Strong English skills are essential; experience with electron microscopy, spectroscopy, experimental electrochemistry, and data interpretation is advantageous. German language knowledge is beneficial.

Applicants must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Germany for more than 12 months in the 36 months immediately before recruitment. A master’s degree or equivalent in Materials Science, Electrochemistry, Chemistry, Applied Physics, or a closely related discipline is required. Excellent English communication and writing skills are required; good knowledge of electrochemistry and materials science is expected. Experience with experimental electrochemistry, electrochemical technologies, electron microscopy and/or spectroscopy, and data interpretation is an advantage. German language knowledge is beneficial.
