About this position

INM - Leibniz Institute for New Materials in Saarbrücken, Germany is recruiting for the MSCA-DN e-ChemIn network: Doctoral Candidate (DC3) on Understanding ion adsorption and transfer in electrodes on the nanoscale.

This PhD project sits at the intersection of materials science, chemistry, electrochemistry, physics, and advanced characterization. The successful candidate will develop operando scanning TEM (STEM) and EELS methods to study adsorption phenomena and electric double-layer formation at the nanoscale. The work uses room-temperature ionic liquids in nanoconfined environments such as carbon nanotubes and 3D porous carbons, and correlates spatially resolved microscopy/spectroscopy with NMR and operando XPS to understand charge storage and electrolyte degradation.

The project is part of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Network e-ChemIn (ElectroChemical Interfaces for energy conversion and storage), involving academic and industrial partners across multiple countries. The selected candidate will enroll in a PhD program at Saarland University and will also benefit from secondments at Leiden University and industry partners.

Eligibility: applicants must hold a master’s degree or equivalent in Materials Science, Electrochemistry, Chemistry, Applied Physics, or a closely related field. Candidates must not already hold a doctoral degree and must satisfy the MSCA mobility rule (not having lived or worked in Germany for more than 12 months in the 36 months before recruitment). Strong English skills are required; German is helpful but not mandatory.

Funding: the position is funded for 36 months under Horizon Europe / MSCA Doctoral Network rules and includes a living allowance, a mobility allowance of €710/month, and, where applicable, a family allowance of €660/month, plus social security coverage and training/networking opportunities.
