About this position
The European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) in Grenoble, France, is offering a PhD project on laser additive manufacturing of new-generation aluminium alloys using synchrotron techniques.
This research will investigate the process–microstructure–property/functionality–performance relationship in novel aluminium alloys, with a focus on how Laser Metal Additive Manufacturing (LMAM) can support advanced, more sustainable metal production. The project is based at ESRF’s ID19 beamline, a high-resolution X-ray imaging beamline dedicated to radiography and microtomography using partially coherent hard X-rays. The PhD student will use advanced synchrotron X-ray imaging and tomography to study microstructure development, porosity formation mechanisms, and their influence on material properties and overall performance. The project is positioned at the intersection of materials science, materials physics, applied physics, and experimental X-ray methods, with strong relevance to next-generation manufacturing and circular economy goals.
The project is supported by Constellium, a leading aluminium supplier, and the Centre for Additive Manufacturing at RMIT University in Australia. The successful candidate will be enrolled in the doctoral school at the University of Kassel (Germany) and RMIT University (Australia), while being based full-time at ESRF in Grenoble, with a 3-month secondment at Constellium in Voreppe, France, and possible additional visits to RMIT totalling up to 3 months.
Eligibility requires a degree that allows PhD enrolment, such as an MSc or equivalent, in chemistry, materials science, physics, or a closely related discipline. Completed degree proof is required at application, and candidates must be able to demonstrate English proficiency at B2 level unless exempt. Experience in experimentation is desirable, and prior knowledge of X-ray imaging, metallurgy, or programming would be advantageous. The posting also requires compliance with the Marie Skłodowska-Curie mobility rule.
