About this position
The European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) in Grenoble, France is offering a PhD position on in situ X-ray nanodiffraction analysis of hydrogen interaction with microstructures. This project is hosted within ID13, a beamline team of seven people focused on fast scanning X-ray micro- and nano-beam diffraction combined with X-ray fluorescence for in-situ and operando studies. The PhD will develop an electrochemical X-ray nanodiffraction technique to investigate hydrogen interactions with metallic microstructures. The research aims to track hydrogen diffusion fronts, hydride formation, and the effects of interfaces and stress gradients while simultaneously characterizing structural, microstructural, and stress-strain evolution during hydrogen charging.
The topic is highly relevant to hydrogen-based technologies, energy transition, and sustainability. It sits at the intersection of materials science, experimental physics, electrochemistry, and synchrotron-based characterization. A strong interest in materials science is essential. Previous experience in X-ray diffraction and/or electrochemistry is welcome but not mandatory, and familiarity with scientific programming tools such as Python or Matlab is an advantage.
Applicants must have a degree enabling PhD enrolment in chemistry, materials science, physics, or a closely related discipline. The candidate must provide proof of diploma completion at the time of application, with MSCA rules allowing an official completion certificate in some cases. English proficiency at B2 level is required unless exempt through native-English background or an English-taught degree. Candidates must also satisfy doctoral enrolment conditions and the Marie Sklodowska-Curie mobility rule, meaning they must not have spent more than 12 months in the host country during the three years before the deadline.
The successful candidate will be enrolled at Montanuniversity Leoben Doctoral School as part of the recruitment. The contract is for two years, renewable for one additional year, and ESRF highlights a competitive compensation and allowances package, including relocation support for Grenoble.
