About this position

This PhD at the University of Nottingham explores how high-powered laser processing can support the circular economy through advanced, flexible materials manufacturing and recycling approaches.

The project has two main experimental themes. First, it will investigate disassembly and reuse of end-of-life composite components, building on previous work that has demonstrated laser cutting of carbon fibre composites (CFRP). The contactless and highly programmable nature of laser processing makes it well suited to complex geometries and multi-material assemblies, which are increasingly important in circular manufacturing and end-of-life recovery.

Second, the project will develop new strategies for recycling high-value waste as feedstock in laser cladding. Possible approaches include collecting and reusing powder, blending recycled and virgin powder, and repurposing machining scrap and waste wire. This work will build on proof-of-concept research and aims to reduce material costs and waste while expanding the possibilities of recycled inputs in advanced manufacturing.

The PhD is largely experimental and will provide training in materials characterisation, advanced manufacturing techniques, and circular economy principles. Students will benefit from the university’s recently upgraded laser materials processing facilities and extensive materials characterisation equipment. The project is expected to generate a relatively large number of journal publications.

This is a self-funded PhD opportunity. Applicants must secure their own funding for fees and maintenance, either privately or through an external or government-funded scholarship. The position is open to UK and international candidates and will remain open until filled.

Entry requirements specify a university degree, or expected degree completion, with a 2.1 (or international equivalent), and/or a master’s degree at merit level or above in engineering, physics, materials science, or a closely related subject.
