About this position
PhD opportunity at the University of Nottingham in ABA Laser Cladding, a recently developed variant of laser cladding focused on improving material deposition efficiency and expanding the design space for advanced surface coatings.
The project investigates the full potential of ABA cladding, where separated “A” clads are deposited first and then the valleys are filled with “B” clads. The research can be tailored to the interests of the successful candidate and may include multi-material clads, control of final surface topography, functionally graded coatings, inclusion of pre-placed elements, and development of a process model.
This is a largely experimental PhD supported by the University of Nottingham’s upgraded laser materials processing facilities and extensive materials characterisation equipment. The project will build practical and transferable skills in materials characterisation, including optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy, while also developing communication skills through conference presentations and journal publications. The project is expected to generate a relatively high number of publications.
Eligibility: applicants should be a university graduate or expecting to graduate with a 2.1 (or international equivalent) and/or hold a master’s degree at merit level or above in a relevant field such as engineering, physics, materials science, or a closely related discipline. The opportunity is open to UK and international candidates.
Funding: this is a self-funded PhD. Applicants must arrange their own funding for tuition fees and living costs, either privately or through external or government scholarship support.
Application: the project is open until filled, with a stated deadline of 17 August 2026. To apply, email Dr Katy Voisey with a cover letter, CV, and academic transcripts.
