About this position
PhD opportunity at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR), Helmholtz Institute Freiberg for Resource Technology (HIF), in Freiberg, Germany. The project is titled “PhD Student (f/m/d) Li, Sn, and W transport and enrichment in Variscan mineral systems” and focuses on geology, earth science, structural geology, economic geology, geochemistry, and mineralogy.
The research investigates the structural setting of known magmatic and magmatic-hydrothermal Li, Sn, and W deposits in the Variscan Orogen, with emphasis on structural controls on ore-forming processes, petrological constraints on alteration and mineralization, modelling of metal transport by hydrothermal fluids, and fluid-rock interaction. The role also includes analysis, interpretation, documentation, and publication/presentation of results in journals, workshops, conferences, and project meetings.
Applicants should hold a completed Master’s or Diploma degree in Geology, Structural Geology, Economic Geology, Geochemistry, Mineralogy, or a related field. Desired experience includes magmatic and magmatic-hydrothermal mineral systems, field-based geological studies, and strong structural geology knowledge. Modelling experience for fluid-rock interaction and magmatic processes is an advantage. Excellent English is required; German, French, or Czech are beneficial. A driving license is also advantageous.
The position is a full PhD funding (“Vollpromotion”) for 36 months, with salary and benefits under TVöD-Bund and possible pay group 13 classification. Benefits include paid leave, pension scheme, flexible working, and a supportive international research environment.
To apply, prepare the requested documents including cover letter, CV, diplomas/transcripts, and publication list, then submit via the online application system before 13 November 2026.
