About this position

Two fully funded PhD positions are available in the Lowell Program at the University of Arizona for research on critical minerals in the southwestern USA. The projects are flexible and may combine field work and laboratory work, with topics spanning conventional and unconventional resources associated with polymetallic base-metal, sediment-hosted U-V-Cu, IOCG (sensu lato), granite-related lithophile element, and carbonatite-REE systems.

The positions are intended to start as early as the first half of 2027. Applicants with some prior experience are encouraged, and a master's degree is considered a plus, including internships. Additional scholarship support may be available for students who have a long-term interest in teaching and at least one year of industry experience.

Interested candidates should contact Mark Barton directly at [email protected]. This is a strong fit for students interested in mineral resources, ore deposits, economic geology, and critical materials research.
