About this position

Doctoral Student in Machine Learning and Medical Data Science at ETH Zurich in Zurich, Switzerland.

The Medical Data Science Group, led by Prof. Julia Vogt, is recruiting a highly motivated PhD student to work at the intersection of machine learning, AI, and medical data science. Research directions include representation learning, pre- and post-training of foundation models, generative AI, explainability and interpretability, probabilistic modeling, time-series analysis, and multimodal learning, with a strong focus on healthcare applications.

The role involves independent research, model design and evaluation, publishing in conferences and journals, and contributing to teaching and student supervision. The environment is interdisciplinary, with collaboration across technical and medical disciplines, access to high-performance computing, and support for conference participation and training.

Applicants should hold a Master's degree in computer science, machine learning, statistics, applied mathematics, or a closely related technical field. Strong foundations in mathematics, statistics, and machine learning, plus programming skills such as Python, are expected. Good English communication skills and a strong interest in both foundational ML research and medical applications are important; experience with medical or biological data is helpful but not required.

The preferred application deadline is 22 November 2026, and applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. The preferred start date is 1 January 2027 or later by mutual agreement. Apply only through the online portal and include a cover letter, CV, transcripts and degree certificates, three references, and a publication/thesis/writing sample.
