About this position

PhD opportunity at the University of East Anglia in the School of Chemistry with Dr Trey Koev on mapping antimicrobial resistance in fungi in 3-D as it happens. The project asks how fungi such as Aspergillus fumigatus respond after exposure to antifungal or crop-protection chemicals, and whether resistance begins at the colony edge or across the whole organism.

You will combine microbiology with analytical chemistry and magnetic resonance / NMR-based 3-D chemistry mapping in living fungal material. The work spans two Norwich Research Park institutes and is aimed at understanding fungal cell-wall remodeling, metabolic rewiring, and recovery after chemical exposure.

This is a fully funded PhD studentship through the Norwich Research Park Biosciences Doctoral Training Programme (NRPDTP) for October 2027 entry. Funding includes tuition fees, an annual stipend, and a research training support grant. All students also complete a three-month professional internship placement (PIPS).

Eligibility highlights: applicants from biology, chemistry, physics, or computational backgrounds are welcome; a UK 2:1 bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) is required; no prior NMR experience is needed; and the English requirement is IELTS 6.5 overall with 6.0 in each component.

Apply via the NRPDTP website and use the programme’s required Personal and Research statement templates. The project has been shortlisted for funding, and shortlisted candidates will be interviewed on 2–4 February 2027.
