About this position

Tu/e (Eindhoven University of Technology) is advertising 3 PhD positions in Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, mechanics of materials, and advanced manufacturing through the Cera-Shield project. The research focuses on advanced ceramic-based protection systems, including lightweight layered ceramics, ceramic–composite systems, and ceramic–metal systems.

The three PhD tracks are: (1) development of advanced ceramic microstructures, mainly experimental; (2) modeling and optimization of ceramic–composite systems, mainly numerical; and (3) design and manufacturing of ceramic–metal systems, mainly experimental. The work combines experiments, simulations, manufacturing, and system-level design, with applications in safety, aerospace, energy, and infrastructure protection.

Supervision is by Diletta Giuntini, Tommaso Magrini, and Ron Peerlings, embedded in the Mechanics of Materials section at the Department of Mechanical Engineering. Experimental work will use TU/e’s A3M Lab and Multiscale Lab, while simulation work will have access to specialized software and high-performance computing.

Applicants should have, or be close to completing, a Master’s degree in Materials Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related field. Strong academic performance, analytical ability, curiosity, hands-on engineering motivation, and fluent English are expected. Experience with numerical modeling, materials processing, or characterization is considered an advantage.

The positions are full-time for four years with an intermediate assessment after nine months. Salary is in scale P at approximately €3,204–€4,051 gross per month, plus holiday allowance and year-end bonus. Additional benefits include pension, leave, training, commuting/work-from-home/internet allowance, and access to campus facilities.

Applications must be submitted online via the vacancy portal. The deadline is 2026-10-31. Required documents include a cover letter, CV with publications and three references, full BSc and MSc transcripts, and a short Master’s thesis description with a statement of novelty.
