About this position
PhD opportunity at Eindhoven University of Technology in the Cera-Shield project, focused on materials and mechanics for advanced ceramic-based protection systems. The project offers 3 PhD positions in an interdisciplinary collaboration between academia, industry, and government partners.
The research aims to develop the next generation of lightweight, high-performance ceramic-based protection systems. The work combines new microstructured ceramics, advanced modeling, and innovative manufacturing routes into an integrated design strategy. The three PhD tracks are: development of advanced ceramic microstructures (mostly experimental), modeling and optimization of ceramic-composite systems (mostly numerical), and design and manufacturing of ceramic-metal systems (mostly experimental).
You will be embedded in the Mechanics of Materials section at the Department of Mechanical Engineering. Experimental work will use TU/e’s A3M Lab and Multiscale Lab, while simulation work will have access to specialized software and high-performance computing resources. The project provides an international, application-driven research environment with strong links to industrial and governmental stakeholders.
Successful candidates should have, or be close to completing, a Master’s degree in Materials Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related discipline. An excellent academic record, analytical ability, and fluency in written and spoken English are required. Experience with numerical modeling, materials processing, or characterization is a plus.
The appointment is full-time for four years, with an intermediate assessment after nine months. The position includes teaching duties of about 10–15%, salary on the Dutch university scale P, and benefits including pension, leave provisions, year-end bonus, vacation pay, and support for international staff.
Apply online with a cover letter, CV including publications and three references, transcripts from BSc and MSc degrees, and a short description of your Master thesis with a novelty statement. The vacancy remains open until filled. The application deadline is 2026-10-31.
